Located approximately 20 minutes away from Culiacán, the MDC has been parked in a square near the church since early morning. The mobile center will visit a community for 3-7 days, depending on the size of the population. They send around a car with a public address system, hand out flyers, and even visit families door to door to let the community know they’ve arrived.
The MDC is much larger than we expected, looking more like an off-road caravan than an actual eyeglasses store. The number of services that Ver de Verdad has been able fit inside the unit is really impressive. We decided to test out the mobile center and see if it was able to deliver on its three promises: free eye exams, affordable glasses, and only a 30 minute wait.
After signing up on the blackboard outside of the MCD, I was called up in a matter of minutes by the optometrist, Angel Tamayo, who told us he’d been making glasses manually since he was 8 years old. After getting his technical degree in optometry, he joined Ver de Verdad a year ago and is now one of four people assigned to work at the MCD. In just 10 minutes he performed the eye exam, uploaded my information into their database, and handed me a copy of my prescription. (Left eye: -2dpt, Right eye: -2.25dpt and a total cost so far of $0 MXN)
I then moved on to the middle section of the MCD which is set up for selecting frames and lenses. There are over 100 different models available, the cheapest starting at $150MXN (around $11). Gabriela Armenta helped me decide which ones I wanted. She has been with Ver de Verdad since it first opened and is passionate about being able to interact with clients on a daily basis. After the first few frames I selected prompted her to kindly comment “I don’t think that’s the one for you…” I saw I was in good hands. (As a Style Expert she was named Employee of the Year in 2013.) After 10 minutes I was all set and was asked to wait outside for my new pair of glasses.
When it is was all said and done, Ver de Verdad followed through on everything they promised. I received a free eye exam, paid only $265 MXN (about $20) for my glasses—which had anti-glare lenses—and spent exactly 30 minutes in the whole process. Hugo Moreno, CEO of Ver de Verdad, is adamant about customer satisfaction and is proud of how well the MCD is functioning after just two months of operation. Selling an average of 17 pairs of glasses a day, the MCD is already well ahead of its goal for financial sustainability (175 pairs per month), and Hugo is certain the company will be able to scale the model and build new units in 2015; “We have already been approached by companies who regret not having had the opportunity to sponsor the MCD. We plan to build on that interest to launch more units and hopefully operate MDCs from all our main locations.”

Desde la apertura de su primera óptica en 2012, la red de ópticas de Ver de Verdad se ha ampliado a 21 tiendas en 4 ciudades de México y en 2013 recibió un Premio Nacional de Calidad de la Secretaría de Economía. Con el apoyo del Programa Acelerador de Empresas de FOMIN y OMJ, en Septiembre la empresa inauguró el primer Centro de Diagnóstico Móvil (CDM) del país, ofreciendo lentes de bajo coste a comunidades de bajos ingresos en las zonas rurales y peri-urbanas de las afueras de Culiacán. El equipo de diseño del FOMIN ha tenido la oportunidad de acompañar al CDM y ver de primera mano los servicios que ofrece.
Situado a 20 minutos de Culiacán, el CDM lleva aparcado en una plaza cerca de la iglesia desde primera hora de la mañana. El centro móvil visita las comunidades de 3 a 7 días en función del tamaño de la población. Emiten anuncios por la megafonía de un coche, reparten panfletos e incluso realizan visitas de puerta a puerta con tal de avisar a la comunidad de que han llegado.
Al llegar el CDM es mucho más grande de lo que nos esperábamos, pareciéndose más a una caravana todo-terreno que a una óptica de verdad. Sin embargo, lo realmente impresionante es la cantidad de servicios que Ver de Verdad ha logrado integrar dentro de la unidad. Decidimos poner a prueba el centro móvil y ver si realmente era capaz de cumplir con lo que prometía en sus anuncios: exámenes de la vista gratis, lentes de bajo coste y un tiempo de espera de tan sólo 30 minutos.
Entré para echar un vistazo a la última sección del CDM donde se encargan de montar las lentes. Rafael Medina es el responsable de esta sección además de ser el conductor del centro móvil. Tardó sólo 10 minutos en medir el espacio disponible en el armazón, recortar los cristales prefabricados debidamente y, finalmente, encajar bien el cristal.
